Knee Replacement Surgery in Turkey: What International Patients Need to Know

NEProf. Dr. Nurullah Ermiş·18 March 2025

Knee Replacement in Turkey: The Value Proposition

Total knee replacement (TKR) is one of the most frequently performed major orthopaedic surgeries worldwide. Despite its high success rate, the cost remains a barrier for many patients — particularly those who are uninsured or face long NHS waiting times in the UK.

In the United States, a total knee replacement typically costs $40,000–$70,000. In the UK on private pay, patients face £15,000–£25,000. At Central Hospital Istanbul, the same procedure using a premium implant — Stryker Triathlon, Zimmer Biomet NexGen, or equivalent — costs approximately $10,000–$14,000 all-inclusive. That represents a saving of 65–80% compared to US prices.

Knee replacement in Istanbul delivers the same implants and outcomes as Western centres — at a price that makes the decision straightforward.

Types of Knee Replacement Available

  • Total knee replacement (TKR): Replaces all three compartments. The gold standard for advanced, diffuse osteoarthritis.
  • Partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement (UKR): Replaces only one compartment. Faster recovery, more bone preserved — suitable when damage is confined to one area.
  • Robotic-assisted TKR: Uses the Stryker Mako robotic arm for sub-millimetre implant positioning. Available at Central Hospital.
  • Revision knee replacement: More complex surgery to replace a failed primary implant. Costs $16,000–$24,000 in Turkey vs. $60,000–$100,000 in the US.

Am I a Candidate for Knee Replacement?

Knee replacement is recommended when:

  • X-rays show bone-on-bone arthritis (Kellgren-Lawrence grade 3–4)
  • Pain limits daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or sleeping
  • Conservative treatments (physiotherapy, injections, weight loss, NSAIDs) have provided insufficient or temporary relief
  • The knee is significantly deformed (varus or valgus alignment)

Age alone is not a contraindication — active patients in their 50s and early 60s are increasingly choosing knee replacement. Modern implants are designed to last 20+ years in appropriately selected patients.

The Central Hospital Process for International Patients

  • Pre-operative review: Send weight-bearing knee X-rays (AP, lateral, full-length leg) and any MRI scans. Our team confirms the diagnosis and implant plan within 2 business days.
  • Arrival: We recommend arriving 1–2 days before surgery. Pre-op labs and anaesthesia assessment are completed on arrival day.
  • Surgery: Performed under spinal or general anaesthesia. Takes 60–90 minutes. Drain typically removed on day 2.
  • Hospital stay: 3–4 nights standard. Physiotherapy begins on surgery day or day 1 post-op.
  • Discharge: Patients leave walking with crutches or a walking frame. A minimum 7–10 days in Istanbul before flying is strongly advised due to DVT risk.

Recovery Timeline for Knee Replacement

  • Week 1–2: Walking with crutches. Swelling and discomfort are normal. Icing, elevation, and physiotherapy exercises twice daily.
  • Week 3–6: Progress to one crutch or walking stick. Begin outpatient physiotherapy.
  • Month 2–3: Most patients walk independently for short distances without aids.
  • Month 3–6: Return to driving and low-impact activities such as swimming and cycling.
  • Month 6–12: Return to golf, light hiking, dancing. Avoid high-impact sports to maximise implant longevity.

Blood Clot Prevention: A Critical Post-Operative Consideration

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a recognised risk after any major lower-limb surgery. All patients receive chemical prophylaxis and calf pump exercise instruction. Flying is not recommended within 7–10 days of surgery. Compression stockings are provided at discharge and must be worn during the flight home.
